Dental sealants help prevent the back teeth from trapping bacteria and developing decay. We provide sealants to our child and adult patients alike.
The molars and premolars are more susceptible to trapping bacteria and developing decay than the other teeth. This is due to the anatomical structure of the occlusal (biting) surfaces, where food is most often chewed on. The deep grooves and fissures of the occlusal surface can make it hard for the bristles on your toothbrush to clean out trapped food and bacteria. This is why decay can develop even with good oral hygiene habits.
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are painted onto the chewing surfaces to make them smoother and less susceptible to trapping bacteria. These plastic coatings that smooth out the rough chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars are known for reducing the risk of cavities on permanent molars by 80 percent!
The procedure only takes one appointment, and we will also make sure to clean out any existing bacteria or decay to prevent it from getting trapped underneath the dental sealant. Once your tooth is cleaned and dried, the dental sealant will be painted on, bonded and dried. After we check your bite, you will be able to return to your normal diet and routine that very same day.
Dental sealants are most often used in children, but we can also apply dental sealants for adults who at risk of decay. To schedule an appointment, please give our Lutz dental office a call at (813) 278-6979.
