If a tooth has suffered from deep cavities or has a crack in the enamel, the pulp inside the tooth may become infected. When this occurs, root canal treatment can clean out the infection, relieve the pain and save the tooth.
Inside every tooth is a root canal. Inside this canal is a soft tissue called pulp. Pulp houses the nerves and nourishing nutrients that every tooth needs. However, if there is a crack in the enamel, or if the tooth has a deep cavity, the pulp can become damaged or decayed. When this happens, the patient will know, as it commonly causes significant tooth pain.
A root canal procedure will remove the problematic pulp before it leads to a more serious issue. The procedure begins with an injection of local anesthetic to numb the tooth and the surrounding area. A dental dam will be placed around the tooth to ensure that it stays clean and dry during the procedure.
Our dentist will access the inside of the tooth through the top using a small dental drill. The pulp will be removed, and the root canal will be irrigated to flush out any remaining bacteria. An antimicrobial solution will be applied as well to prevent further decay from developing. Once the chamber is cleaned and dried, a gutta-percha material will be used to fill the space. A dental crown will then be necessary to completely restore the tooth.
